Answers to questions about the new water/sewer bills

On the new invoices from Cleveland Water there are a few changes that are confusing:

Wastewater Summer Charge
This charge is actually your Solon Sewer Charge for your sewer usage. This description was previously titled Solon Sewer Usage Charge.

Wastewater Billing Fee
This fee is what Cleveland Water charges residents to put the Solon Sewer Charge on your invoice.  This is not a new fee. It was just never a separate line item on the old invoices.

Current Charges Local
This charge appears in the summary portion (top) of the invoice. It is actually the Wastewater Summer Charge (see above).  This is not another fee or charge, but simply a restatement of your sewer charge.

Summer Sprinkling Discount
Many residents have not received their Summer Sprinkling Discount and should contact Cleveland Water to receive this adjustment. If you have received your Summer Sprinkling Discount it may have been calculated incorrectly and will need to be adjusted. You can contact Cleveland Water at (216) 664-2444 and ask for Customer Service.

Disputing your Usage: The Process
If you are disputing your water usage there is a process that Cleveland Water requires. Note also that your sewer usage is calculated by the amount of water used and there may be a discrepancy with your sewer charge as well.

Cleveland Water:
Steps to take before contacting Cleveland Water

1. Check the inside water meter and outside water meter to make sure the meter readings are the same. If the readings are off you may need your meter replaced.
2. Take the reading you recorded from your inside and outside meter and check it against your Cleveland Water Invoice. While the invoices will not be exactly the same (because of the usage since the invoices were sent out), they should be relatively close.
3. Next, make sure there is no water running throughout the house. Check the dials on your water meter to make sure they are not moving. If the water is not running and the dials are moving there may be a leak somewhere that is causing your increased water bill.
4. To check and see if your toilet is leaking place a few drops of food coloring in your toilet tank. If the food coloring appears in the toilet bowl without flushing then there is a leak in your toilet that may be causing your increased water bill.
5. If you have a sprinkler system, contact your sprinkler company to check for leaks within the lines.
6. After all of these steps have been taken you can request someone from Cleveland Water to come out and check your meters. You can contact them at (216) 664-2444 and ask for Customer Service to request this reading.
7. If Cleveland Water determines that there is nothing wrong with the meter you can request a Special Investigation. Requests must be made to:

8. If there is still no adjustment to your water bill you can send a letter to request a hearing in front of the Water
   Review Board. If granted a hearing you can choose to appear in front of the board, but a final determination will not be made at the hearing. The Water Review Board will mail you a response after the hearing.

NOTE: If you are disputing your water consumption you should still pay the amount you think your water bill should be, but you MUST contact Cleveland Water to let them know you are disputing the rest of the bill. DO NOT pay the disputed amount. If you pay the disputed part you will not be eligible to have a hearing in front of the Water Review Board
