Economic Development

Economic Development Message from Director Angee Shaker

As we wrap up 2023, I would like to share some economic development highlights from the year and highlight some city projects that Mayor Kraus, City Council, our city employees and partners are working on for 2024.

Plans are progressing with RHM Real Estate and its partners to transform the vacant auto dealership on Aurora Rd and adjacent properties into a vibrant mix of uses and gathering spaces that we all can enjoy. With the support of the City and Solon Schools, years of economic decline will be reversed and this portion of Solon will become the heart of Solon.

You may have noticed over 40 new and innovative businesses – both large and small - popped up in Solon in 2023. Taking a moment to celebrate several of them with ribbon cutting ceremonies through the Solon Chamber of Commerce has been delightful. Our overall vacancy rates are under 6% in our retail, office and industrial areas. The demand for physical space is growing and areas of concern such as the Uptown Solon shopping center on Kruse Drive are sure filling up now. Thanks to the pickleball craze, Ace Pickleball Club will take over the vacant Bed, Bath and Beyond location, construction is moving fast at the former Mustard Seed location where Tractor Supply will be opening. Gogi En Korean BBQ, Kids Empire and couple other businesses have signed leases there and the dogs of Solon are already enjoying doggy daycare and boarding at Dogtopia.

We continue to make investments and efforts to improve the public transit rider experience for those who commute into Solon to work every day using the RTA buses. Benches and trash receptacles are now placed at our busiest RTA stops and Share Mobility is offering first mile/last mile services.

To help our businesses fill open positions, we are hosting our annual job fair on May 2 at the Solon Community Center. Over 50 employers participated last year. Tables filled our gymnasium wall-to-wall.

Construction will begin on the Solon to Chagrin Falls trail in 2024. The 10’ wide mostly paved all-purpose trail will begin at SOM Center Road near Carter Lumber and provide connectivity to Chagrin Falls. The trail will be owned by the City of Solon and managed by Cleveland Metroparks.

Implementation of the Solon Parks and Recreation master plan will start to take off in 2024. We have partnered with the Superlative Group to help secure naming rights opportunities and deals with businesses and organizations that will go toward park improvements and maintenance.

We also have partnered with the Cuyahoga County Library to expand the Solon Library Branch to make room for a Solon Innovation Center. The innovation center will provide exposure, training and equipment to connect talent to higher paying manufacturing jobs available right here in Solon.

As you can see, it has been a good year for the City of Solon and we have big community and economic development projects lined up in 2024. And all of this is because of our supportive residents, business community and partners.

Warmest wishes to you and your loved ones this holiday season and Happy New Year!

Benches Installed at Busiest RTA Stops

In a continued effort to improve the public transit experience for those traveling to and from work in Solon, benches and trash receptacles were installed this year at several of the RTA's busiest stops along Aurora Road, Solon Road, Cochran Road and SOM Center Road. This is a win for both the riders and the business community when it comes to attracting and retaining talent for positions in manufacturing and the central retail district. The newest bench was installed on SOM Center Road in front of the Fire Station.

Coming Soon in Solon

Opening in Uptown Solon on Kruse Drive in 2024 will be Tractor Supply Company, Gogi En Korean BBQ, Ace Pickleball, and a few more businesses that will be announced in early 2024. We can't wait to welcome these new businesses to the Solon Community. And congratulations to the owners of Dogtopia, the dogs love going there to play.

To be built catty-corner to the Circle K is a Sheetz convenience store/gas station. Construction and demolition is slated to start in March 2025 with a completion date of September 2025.

Hawthorne Estates

Hawthorne Estates will be a 50 and over residential community. Construction on the new housing development that will include approximately 102 single family homes is projected to start in 2023. A proposal was approved by Solon voters in November 2020 which re-zoned the former Hawthorne golf course to a R2A area zoning for homes for those over 50 years old. The developers have been working with the Cleveland Metroparks to keep a large amount of the greenspace on the 85-acre property.
