1. What is Automated Rubbish Collection?

Automated rubbish collection is a clean and convenient curbside rubbish collection program that allows residents to put all their rubbish out in one large container. The rubbish cart holds 95 gallons of bagged rubbish and can easily be rolled out to your curb.

2. Why did Solon go to Automated?

This system offers a more convenient way for you to set out your rubbish. It is a more efficient and cost effective method to collect waste and a better way to provide service to the community. Automated rubbish collection will reduce the number of employees needed to collect rubbish. This will free up Service Department personnel to perform other important city services. It will also reduce injuries to employees from manually picking up rubbish. Automated rubbish collection is a win, win situation for everyone!

3. I have my City issued rubbish cart. What should I know about it?

The initial cart is free and courtesy of the City. Carts should be placed at the curb with the arrows
facing the street and the lid closed with nothing piled on top. Carts should be stored in your garage
throughout the week. Remember that the cart is issued to your address and should not to be taken if
you move.

4. How big are the tipper carts and how much trash do they hold?

Carts have a 95 gallon capacity. They measure 44”(H) x 34”(L) x 25” (W). Carts will hold the equivalent of three normal size trashcans or six to seven large bags.

5. What if I have more rubbish than will fit in the rubbish cart?

Each household was issued one 95 gallon cart. This cart should provide sufficient space for most average size households, however, if you find that even though your household is recycling and still is producing more rubbish than the initial cart can handle, you may lease another cart at the Solon Service Department for a one time fee of $70.00. Remember that any cart issued to your address should not to be taken if you move. Please do not put extra bags next to or on top of the cart as these items will not be picked up.

6. What items can I put in my cart?

Household solid waste items such as pizza boxes, food products, Styrofoam, diapers, clothing,
household glass, etc. should be bagged and then placed into the rubbish cart. Remember to always
bag rubbish to prevent loose garbage from flying around and creating litter on our streets.

7. What should I watch for when placing my tipper cart at the curb?

The cart must be placed at least 3’ from cars, mailboxes, utility poles or any other obstruction. Be sure the arrows on the lid of the cart are pointing towards the street & the cart is placed as close to the curb as possible so the truck can easily grab the cart for collection.

8. What if I have large or bulk items?

Large items, such as household appliances, furniture, lawnmowers, etc., should be put on the tree lawn on your normal rubbish day. They will be picked up by a separate truck sometime during that day. When disposing of freezers or refrigerators, it is imperative to take the doors off!

9. Can "Secondary Recyclables" be brought to the Service Department?

Yes! Secondary recyclables, such as household hazardous waste, paint, motor oil, pool chemicals, gasoline, fertilizer or fire extinguishers.  Bring to the Service Department, Monday through Friday 8:00 am - 11:00 am or in the afternoon 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm. These types of items should never
be disposed of in the trash as they can cause injury to workers and damage to equipment.

10. What about brush or yard waste?

Yard waste should always be put into brown paper lawn bags. Bags should be put out on your rubbish day for collection by a separate yard waste collection truck. Brush should be put out at the curb for collecting & chipping. Crews work their way around the City collecting all brush.
